چکیده
We present results from the first Suzaku observation of the high-mass X-ray binary 4U 1538−522. The broad-band spectral coverage of Suzaku allows for a detailed spectral analysis, characterizing the cyclotron resonance scattering feature at 23.0± 0.4 keV and the iron Kα line at 6.426± 0.008 keV, as well as placing limits on the strengths of the iron Kβ line and the iron K edge. We track the evolution of the spectral parameters both in time and in luminosity, notably finding a significant positive correlation between cyclotron line energy and luminosity. A dip and spike in the lightcurve is shown to be associated with an order-of-magnitude increase in column density along the line of sight, as well as significant variation in the underlying continuum, implying the accretion of a overdense region of a clumpy stellar wind. We also present a phase-resolved analysis, with most spectral parameters of interest showing significant variation with phase. Notably, both the cyclotron line energy and the iron Kα line intensity vary significantly with phase, with the iron line intensity significantly out-of-phase with the pulse profile. We discuss the implications of these findings in the context of recent work in the areas of accretion column physics and cyclotron resonance scattering feature formation. Orbital Phase Spectroscopy of four High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars to Study the Stellar Wind of the Companion
Our work focuses on a comprehensive orbital phase dependent spectroscopy of the four High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars (HMXBPs) 4U 1538-52, GX 301-2, OAO 1657415 & Vela X-1. We hereby report the measurements of the variation of the absorption column density and iron-line flux along with other spectral parameters over the binary orbit for the above-mentioned HMXBPs in elliptical orbits, as observed...

High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars (HMXBP), in which the companion star is a source of supersonic stellar wind, provide a laboratory to probe the velocity and density profile of such winds. Here, we have measured the variation of the absorption column density along with other spectral parameters over the binary orbit for two HMXBP in elliptical orbits, as observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explor...
متن کاملEvidence for a magnetic neutron star in high mass X-ray binary 4U 2206+54 with INTEGRAL/IBIS observations
The hard X-ray source 4U 2206+54 is a peculiar high mass X-ray binary with a main-sequence donor star. Recent X-ray observations suggested that the compact object in 4U 2206+54 may be a neutron star. The X-ray emission comes from the accretion of stellar winds from the massive donor stars, and variability of luminosity may be due to the changes of its orbit phase. To further reveal the nature o...
متن کاملA Further Study of the Luminosity-Dependent Cyclotron Resonance Energies of the Binary X-ray Pulsar 4U 0115+63 with RXTE
The present paper reports on the RXTE observations of the binary X-ray pulsar 4U 0115+63, covering an outburst in 1999 March-April with 44 pointings. The 3−30 keV PCA spectra and the 15−50 keV HEXTE spectra were analyzed jointly for the cyclotron resonance features. When the 3−50 keV luminosity at an assumed distance of 7 kpc was in the range (5−13)×10 erg s, harmonic double cyclotron features ...
متن کاملThe Disk Wind in the Rapidly Spinning Stellar-mass Black Hole 4u 1630−472 Observed with Nustar
We present an analysis of a short NuSTAR observation of the stellar-mass black hole and low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1630−472. Reflection from the inner accretion disk is clearly detected for the first time in this source, owing to the sensitivity of NuSTAR. With fits to the reflection spectrum, we find evidence for a rapidly spinning black hole, a∗ = 0.985 +0.005 −0.014 (1σ statistical errors). Ho...
